Summary of Project Submissions  - Fiscal Year April, 2008 - March, 2009

Project 1
Science Linkage Project - Cyanobacteria Investigation In Cochrane to Paddy's Pond Watershed
We will monitor the three ponds of the Cochrane to Topsail Pond Watershed that had recorded cyanobacteria (commonly known as blue green algae) blooms in the summer of 2007; Paddy's Pond, Three Arm Pond and Three Island Pond. We will also monitor Cochrane Pond, which is just upstream from Paddy's Pond, as well as Topsail Pond, which is just downstream from Three Island Pond. All these ponds were subject to a public advisory last summer when they became the first bodies of water in Newfoundland ever reported to have blue green algae blooms. Read more here

Project 2
Marine Environmental Education Outreach Program
Under the proposed project, Northeast Avalon Atlantic Action Coastal Program (NAACAP) will develop and implement experientially-based, marine education opportunities for teachers and students in Newfoundland and Labrador. The major component of the project will involve implementing a successful marine education program called Trading Books for Boats (TBFB), which consists of on-vessel and in-class components, that are directly linked to curriculum outcomes as prescribed by the NL Department of Education. Project 3
Watershed Action Plan
Northeast Avalon ACAP's primary mandate includes the monitoring, protection and restoration of the watersheds and coastal areas of the northeast Avalon region. To work effectively on these tasks, it is imperative to develop and maintain a clear understanding of the overall health of these ecosystems. Equally important is the conveyance of this information to all levels of government, to business and industry, and to the public at large to ensure consensus is reached on priority tasks that need to be undertaken to address the identified problems.
