Familiarise yourself with what is a "Hazardous
Waste". Here is a a list
ACAP would like you to print and place somewhere in your house or workplace.
Never flush garbage of any kind down your toilet. Cigarette butts, disposalble
diapers, dental floss, sanitary products, condoms and the like, create
problems for your harbour.
Never pour oil, antifreeze, transmission fluid or brake fluid into
storm sewers. Check with your local garage about safe disposal of these
products.
Never pour nail polish remover, chlorine bleach, medicine, paint
or paint remover down the drain. Save them for safe disposal at Household
Hazardous Waste Days.
Never litter.
Use "green" environmentally friendly products.
Practice the three R's - Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.
Buy products with the "Ecologo" and you will know they are less
harmful to the environment.
Start an environment club in your neighbourhood or at school and
share ideas to help solve environmental problems facing your community.
Clean up after your pet. Animal waste runs off lawns and curbs
and contributes to pollution in the rivers and the harbour.
If you take lunch to school or work, use a re-usable plastic container
and take home your lunch bag.
If your area has a recycling program for newspapers, glass, plastic
or cans, be sure to use it.
Organize and participate in special school yard and neighbourhood
litter clean-up campaigns.
Write letters to the editors of your local newspapers to make your
views on the environmental issues known.
